Buddy and Lou, thanks for enlightening me about what SKCC is. I assume the
stations I heard calling CQ SKCC were in some kind of contest.

Most likely it's the Straight Key Century Club:

It's another club for boosting CW oriented toward straight keys and bugs. 
They must be having a contest or QSO party today. I haven't joined that
group but did join CW ops a week ago. That's a more advanced CW group and
their web site is:

www.cwops.org

They do some pretty proactive things to promote and advance the use of CW.
