Hi Jim & List,

Your message below has prompted a memory from at least 3 decades back.

You talked about using a mobile rig like an ht, well, a friend who shal
be nameless came up with that idea out of necessity at the Dayton
Hamvention in 1982..

We were just arriving at the fest when he realized he forgot his ht.
Using typical ham ingenuity he proceeded to construct what we dubbed the
Ht or Heavy Talkie.

The rig consisted of a Kenwood 7850 wired to a small gel battery. The
radio and battery were attached to his belt by heavy Gage wire. The
antenna was a rubber duck on a pl259 to bnc connector. The rig was run
at 5 watts. Get the picture?

I can't attest to the strange looks we got while walking around the fest
but loads of folks were making comments.

Out of all the portable devices there I'll bet my friend got the best
battery life. That jell battery ran all 3 days with power to spare.
