If the wire pairs are not correct, you will have trouble - I learned it from
experience! Here is a link to the proper pair assignment:

Subject: hard wiring issue
I'm running about 75 feet of cat5 with a standard RJ45 termination block at
each end.
I'm using the straight-thru wiring, wh-gr, gr, wh-orange, blue, wh-blue,
orange, wh-brown, brown on each box. Should I be reversing the colors on
one end? I have both ends wired in the same sequence.
When I plug in a laptop through the new cat5 with a patch cable at each end,
I can't get an internet connection.
I plug the laptop into the existing jack with either patch cable, works
fine. I checked both patch cables with a cable tester, the tester also
shows 4 good pairs. Kinda hard to test the 75' run after it's installed
through the walls, etc.
