    Hi all,

My name is Dennis here in Santa Barbara, Ca. and I have a TS-590/s. Just
installed my SB220 amp and all is fine with the amp. A friend accidentally
hit a button and now my PGS1 doesn't say all the frequencies. I mean it
leaves out the last number. Does anyone know how to recet the radio so the
pgs1 says the whole freq display?

Thanks and have a great day.

If anyone wants to call me, I would love to talk with someone about the 590
and more of its button functions. Especially with a blind person that knows
the radio better than I do. GRIN! Got the radio a few months ago and need
to learn a lot more about it... Podcasts and any other help would be
greatfully appreciated.

73 , from W B 6 O B B ... Dennis

Interestingly enough in windows 7 my time clock was off even though I
had set it to sync over the internet.

When you do that you have a choice of two servers.

One is nist.gov and the other is windows.com

I set it to the nist.gov server figuring it would be the best.

Wrong!

Time clock could end up being 3 minutes off after a while.

Switched it to windows.com and its now accurate.

Who would have thought.

Very interesting, Don.

Let us know if the new settings hold up over time.

That's the BCD436HP. The first thing I asked the clerk was whether
this thing had a touchscreen, or were there keys? Good thing,
because I'm not a fan of touchscreens, even with the iPhone. I may
be old-school here, but I like physical keys I can touch, along with
audible feedback.--Matt, N1IBB.

The BCD436HP is made by Uniden/Bearcat, and costs about $500, though
you might be able to get it for less on Amazon. Funny thing: It
doesn't come with a wall charger.--Matt.

you are supposed to charge it with the USB cable from your computer.
And 5VDC USB wall chargers are pretty easy to locate and dirt cheap these
days...even dollar stores, flee markets and discount stores sell them for a
few bucks.
If I were you, I'd pickup some high capacity Lithium Ion double A batteries
and a decent charger for them so you always have fresh batteries for the
unit.

the 536 doesn't have a touch screen...I believe there is only the one model
out there with a touch screen and I'm not sure how popular it ever got...
They took the home patrol technology and put it into the new scanners sans
the touch screen, so I'm guessing consumer response wasn't all that hot for
the original home patrol scanner with the full touch screen on it.

I was tuning around on the bands this morning, and it sure seems like they
are all pretty much dead. Are you all experiencing the same conditions or is
it just my rig? I tuned across 80/75, 40, 20, 17, and 10 meters, and heard
very, very little activity, absolutely nothing on 17 and 10 meters at all,
and few stations on 20.

Hi,

The BCD436HP comes with a USB cable that you use for data transfers and
charging. It comes with three rechargeable batteries and the scanner won't
recharge those batteries until you turn on the recharging circuit in the
menus.

When you first hook up your 436 to your computer, you will be asked to
install software to your computer that will update the scanner. Both the
436 and 536 work the same way regarding installation and they are not touch
screen scanners. The home patrol 1 was completely touch screen operated and
that scanner will not do phase 2 digital p25.

Matt, I haven't had a chance to do much with the menus yet, but that's on my
bucket list!

Ed and Jim, I'm sure glad you guys are having the same band conditions, and
it just isn't me! <lol> I just tuned across my favorite band, 17 meters, and
also 15 and 10 meters and never heard a single signal. Ed, I would get on
CW, but for some strange reason, my paddle isn't working with my TS-590, and
I cannot find my old straight key. So for now, I'm stuck on SSB. I guess I
need to get my computer here in the ham shack and figure out how to use it
to type in what I'm saying and have it talk to my TS-590 and send the CW
that way. If anyone here is doing that, please post back and tell me what I
need to do the same.

Ron,

Don't know if you have worked CW with the 590 already and you just have
a paddle problem, but have you turned on the break-in function? It's
the same as the VOX button for SSB, third button down from the upper
left corner of the radio. If this isn't turned on, you just get side
tone and no TX, either with paddle or straight key.

As for keyboard CW, most logging programs offer this, with the addition
of some hardware. What logger are you using?

Steve,

First, I am not using any logging program; I created my own from a
spreadsheet program. I am just getting back into ham radio after being
totally inactive for the past several years. So, I am having to start from
scratch all over again. I'm open to any and all suggestions regarding the
best, most blind-user friendly software programs I need. Within reason,
money is not an issue.

I have my VOX/break-in turned on for CW operation, but my paddle just isn't
working, which makes me feel badly because I love that paddle. I'm pretty
certain the problem is a bad connection inside the plug. When I plug the
paddle plug into my TS-590, all I get are the dits, but when I press my
paddle to the left for the dashes, nothing happens. However, if I pull the
plug out from the jack just a little, I can get just dashes, but no dots!
<lol> So, evidently it is the plug, or at least, the way the plug is wired.

Lou,

No, my loop doesn't work at all on 40; the SWR is too high. So, I think I am
going to put up a double bazooka for 40, or I have a Diamond CP-5HS
Multi-Band Vertical that I might put up. Ideally, it would be nice to have
all three antennas, the loop, the double bazooka, and the Diamond CP-5HS so
I could switch from one to the other, depending upon the band and
conditions. On 40 meters, for instance, the vertical would probably be best
most of the time for working you, but the double bazooka would probably work
best for working Pat.

Not just you, Ron. I fear it's pretty muchh universal. 40 may be your best

Ron,

Sorry about the paddle thing. I'm not much of a CW op, but maybe
someone will have a suggestion.

While I don't use it myself, a lot of folks on the list use the software
by N3FJP. I think cost is reasonable and he has a lot of contest
programs as well as a general logger. XMlog is free and I use it as a
catch all for my contest logs. Some use N1MM for contest logging,
while I use Writelog. All of the above offer keyboard CW. A free
CW program is CWget, but not sure how accessible it is.

I'm sure you will get other suggestions, but these are a few from my
moldy brain.

Ron, your using the quarter inch jack on the back of the rig? That is for a
padel and using the internal keyer in the rig. The small jack along side of
that jack is for a straight ke, a bug or an external keyer. If by chance
your padel has a small jack, using the wrong adapter could do what may be
the problem. Good luck and 73.

Oops, meant to send this to the whole list...

You can use JJRadio to send CW with the 590. You just go to the "send text"
area and type. The only kaviat is that you don't want to type too far ahead
or it'll lose characters.

As for your paddle, yes, it sounds like the dash side isn't connected. You
could plug it into the straight key plug and use the dot side of the paddle
like a straight key.

G M Ron, there was a few stations on this morning and if your interested in
D X there was a good, rare one on at 1300 Z on 30 meters, 4W/PE7T
Timor/Leste. Also 4W/N1YC was on 20 meters around 14:00 both on C W so good
luck. 73

Hi, Bob. The PC doesn't seem to recognize the scanner when it's

Ed, I appreciate your feedback re the two jacks on the back of the TS-590
for the paddle verses the straight key. I know which is which, and I am
pretty certain that my plug on my paddle has developed a problem. I found my
old World II surplus straight key, but unfortunately, it doesn't have the
right plug on it to fit into the small 1/8 inch jack for the straight key on
the TS-590. So, I am going to buy some new plugs for my paddle and straight
key, and then, I should be ready to work some CW. It's been a long time
since I've worked any CW; so, it will take me a few CW contacts to get my
speed back up to maybe a blazing 5 WPM! <lol> Seriously, I used to be pretty
good on CW, but that was a long time ago.

Does anyone here use an online backup that’s accessible? I tried Carbonite,
but their backup manager isn’t accessible at all, or at least it wasn’t when
I tried it.
