The carrier adjustment is to keep the ALC within range, while still
allowing full power output. Maybe harder to do on the 2000 since there
is no voice feedback on the ALC readings. The 590 has voice for the
ALC reading, and if set at the default "50" will give an "Over"
announcement, meaning the ALC meter is pegged.
Prior to the recent590 modification to fix the ALC spike, it was common
for 590 owners with SS amps to set carrier around 20. This setting
would give full output on all bands, keep the ALC down to just a blip or
2 on the meter, and avoid the power spike.
