Steve, with my Zerofive vertical on 30 meters, I have indeed found that 
sometimes I get the best reception, signal to noise, with my dipole, even 
when the vertical is by far the best on transmit.

Yes, but are the higher S units an increase in overall signal level, or =
just an increase in band noise.  If a signal registers S9, and the noise =
registers S8, that signal won't be easily heard.  On the other hand, if =
the noise registers S1, that same S9 signal is likely to stand out.
