Dave:
The contest is the CQ WPX (or worked all prefixes) contest.
It is a world-wide SSB contest that has been occurring all week-end on the
typical HF contest bands--10 through 160.
The number you are hearing is the sequential serial number that you give
each contact to mark his/her place in your log.
In other words, if I was your first contact, you'd give me a serial number
of 001. If you were my 150th contact, the serial number I would give you
back for me would be 150.
I hope this helps, and if you can get on the air to play a bit in the
contest, have fun.

Subject: contest?
Hi y=E2=80=99all:
What contest is taking place right now, particularly on 10 Meters, =
exchange seems to be callsign, signal report, and some kind of number.
The first items are self ebident, but what does this number represent?
73,
