I posted this to the mailing list for the Philadelphia Computer Users'
Group for the blind and Visually Impaired. I'm reposting it here, in
case it's of interest to anyone on this list.
Hi.
First, I want to thank everyone who called in during our last meeting.
It was nice to hear from members who normally aren't able to call in.
Second, I'd like to thank all of you for making this group what it is.
It was April of 2013 when this group started and, without your calls and
messages on this list, there would be no users' group.
I'd also like to thank Hope Paulos for joining us and answering our many
questions covering the iPhone. Hope, you're welcome to join us anytime
your schedule allows.
Here is a list of links mentioned during our last meeting.
Fedora Outlier, LLC
www.fedoraoutlier.com
This is where you'll find Hope Paulos while she's working as their
director of teaching and curriculum. They also produce the book "the
Old Hat Guide to iPhone Accessibility" for $9.99, which I highly
recommend due to its combination of great information with a relaxed
writing style.

Applevis
www.applevis.com
An excellent resource covering Mac and i-devices from the perspective of
a visually impaired user. Contains how-to guides, demonstrations in mp3
format, app reviews and a very active forum.
iMore
www.imore.com
this wasn't mentioned during the meeting but this is a site similar to
Applevis except that it's geared more toward sighted users. It's got a
lot of interesting info covering iOS, however.
Spyware Blaster
https://www.brightfort.com/spywareblaster.html
Free program to deal with and prevent spyware from invading your PC. I
haven't used this yet so can't comment except that I plan to give it a
test spin.
GWConnect
https://www.gwmicro.com/App_Central/Apps/App_Details/?scriptid=1353
GW Micro's app to access Skype with a screen reader-friendly interface.
I'll be contacting them to get specific info on the mystery of whether
or not it supports Windows 8.1. Please note that I'm not a user of this
program or of Skype and so I can't say much beyond the fact that I
intend to get info from them and will report back when I get it.
Update: I found this message from the GWApps mailing list.

Subject: Re: GWConnect In Windows8.1
Dave,
Regrettably, the SkypeKit will not run under Windows 8.1. We have asked
Skype to release an update, but thus far none has been issued.
Regards,
Steve
As this message was written last October, I'll contact them for an update.
Microsoft disability Answerdesk Contact Info

This page provides the phone number and a link with a contact form to
get a response via email. They'll assist with installation of Windows
software, as well.
Dolphin

Company produces Supernova screen enlarger and screen reader, along with
guide software for novices. Hope mentioned it as one of her preferred
screen readers.
Window-eyes for Office
www.windoweyesforoffice.com
A free version of the Window-eyes screen reader which will run on any
computer with Office 2010 or 2013 installed.
That's it for the list of resources mentioned during our last meeting.
Thanks again to all of you who participated and we'll get together again
on Friday, May 30.
