Actually, I should explain by using an htalkie, I use it on receive 
initially, gradually decreasing output of generator and peaking up band 
pass.  You can also go to either side and see how you're doing.  You can 
get very very close that way on band pass.  Once there, I use the ht or 
another radio on transmit to look at signal loss through the duplexer as 
well as swr.  Usually right on.  For the band pass, I do the oposite, I 
keep increasing output into the duplexer with the ht on the other side 
until I get the absolutely deepest notch.  Each side is tuned just the 
oposite of course.  also you want to keep a dummy load on the unterminated 
port as this has some effect.  Also these interact a bit, so you have to 
go back and forth a few times.  I really enjoy doing that kind of 
alignment as well as peaking receivers.
