In many Kenwoods as I mentioned earllier, this was done via a dumper 
inside, a hardware fix.  705 and 805 series workede great.  Later 
versions forced you to remove the jumper before radio was put in 
service, but we figured a way around that as well.  I sold hundreds of 
those 805s on uhf and had very very little trouble with them.
