Nah, no problem with the speaker being in the way.  The voice chip goes kind 
of near the front of the rig under the top bover.  Jim WA6EKS

If I remember right, you have to remove 4 screws on the top and 4 on the
sides, that is the side with the speaker on it.  I think you have to move
the speaker out of the way to install the voice board, but it has been a
while since I've done that.  It isn't all that difficult.
