Harvey and all:
Well, I just got off the phone with my main contact in the University's I T
department, and he said that this is most likely an indication that the
computer itself is beginning to fail.
For now, since I'll be on travel for much of the rest of the month of July,
I'll try using the laptop with an external keyboard which, at this point,
works fine.
Then, I'll take into the University's I T shop for servicing, sometime in
early August.
Thanks to all for putting up with this "off topic" thread.

That's a different key combination than what I have heard of. But I hope
you get this problem corrected soon. Since it's a university computer,
maybe they will correct it soon for you.

Harvey:
Well, it turns out that, on this particular laptop, I was right about the
function key.
It is the second key in from the very bottom left-hand side of the laptop
keyboard--right next to the control key.
You can turn the numlock on and off by pressing this function key, and then
tapping the f4 key. Jaws says numlock on or numlock off, but the keys I
mentioned still do not work whether the numlock function is on or off.
