Hurray! I did it! Special thanks to Kevin, my very first contact ever. How cool is that to put in your log book : ) And thanks to Don too. Everyone was SO helpful, kind and patient.
Guess what my problem was? There's that section of four knobs in the lower-right of the rig; and the upper-left of that controls RF gain )outer ring) and something else )inner ring). Well, they were both turned all the way down. I guess RF gain has some importance in all this ; ) I'm sure we all thought it was something silly - and indeed it was! Hurray!

144.33 MHz is NOT a simplex FM frequency. It is in the OSCAR sub-band and should NOT be used for terrestrial communications.
FM simplex frequencies are 146.40 to 146.58 and 147.42 to 147.57 MHz. There is NO FM below 144.60 MHz as that area is reserved for SSB and other modes. The national simplex calling frequency is 146.52 MHz.
Please check http://www.arrl.org/band-plan for details of band plans.
FM gets the lion’s share of 2 meters so please respect users of other modes by not intruding into their band segments.

Hi!
I have tried to make my first 2M contact on my new Kenwood TS-2000 without luck. I *think* it's setup right. Basically, I have followed the instructions for this per the icanworkthisthing.com <http://icanworkthisthing.com> "Quick Start Guide" at the link below. The following are my first of many questions:
1. When I rotate the tuning knob clockwise increasing the frequency, sometimes I hear a "beep." What does that mean? It seems to happen at random, even frequencies; like 145.300, 146.400, etc.
2. Well, since I live in LA, I expected to hear a lot of traffic. But I only hear really faint and scarce squawking - really I hear nothing. Am I missing something?
