In fact, I'm thinking of asking my sighted XYL to do a visual on the meter
for me, so that I can be even more accurate than just listening to the voice
read-out.

Tom,

While you're adjusting the Mic Gain, check the ALC and make your adjustments
based on what it's doing instead of just arbitrarily picking a number. 
Otherwise, you'll waste lots of time.
