But, you could get one of those portable screens that could fit between the
window and the feed-through panel.

That's what I did in Colorado when the weather got warm.

Yes, the wires have to go out past the screen.  The window shuts on the
wood, and the wires have to come from the outside to the back of the wood,
to the connector, and then inside you hook  the other end to  a wire to your
radio.
