Hello, Steve KW3A and listmates:
Well, I applied the serial # reference code you provided on my
TS 590 that was purchased this past February from H R O, and the letter and
#s came up "B 3 4, which seems to mean that it was manufactured in April
2013 (in Malaysia.) (I was a bit surprised at the "age" of my new rig prior
to its purchase.) I have no experience running an amplifier with this rig
or any other rig for that matter, so I don't have a alc "probolem"
presently. I am in the process, however, of having a Collins 30L-1 linear
amplifier that I purchased about 10 years ago when I still had eyesight, but
never moved forward to put into use when sight failed shortly thereafter.
to be refurbished with new capacitors, new power supply board, mov added,
etc. It will be awhile before the Collins amp will be ready to attempt to
use with the TS 590
I've been told by a few hams that the 30L-1 is simple and forgiving enough
that I should be able to use it successfully as a blind ham. So, my
questions are: 1) Have any persons on this listserv use or have experience
using a Collins 30L-1 amplifier? and if so, with what transmitter? 2) Has
anyone run the Collins amp with a Kenwood TS 590? 3) Do you have any
recommendations as to the need for a buffer/interface between the
transmitter and the amplifier? 4) Although I do have a LDG TW-1 talking
wattmeter, I expect that it would be good to have a good, separate wattmeter
to measure amplifier power. If so, any wattmeter recommendations for blind
ham operation with the amplifier?
Again, I guess that there is no alc "problem" with a pre-2014 TS
590 transceiver until you try the TS 590 with a particular amplifier,
although there may be some "trends" that seem to pertain to particular types
and models of amplifiers, such as solid state vs tube amplifiers when mated
with the TS 590. Your thoughts and suggestions relating to blind ham
operation of an amplifier, including amplifier recommendations will be
gladly received. (Just because I may come to have my 30L-1 potentially
ready for use in the future, obviously, if it's "not a good fit", then I'll
start dreaming about something more comfortable, if necessary.)
Thanks in advance.
