I traveled across country with a friend one year, and he had an 817 with a small attachable whip. We set in the observation car one night and talk to somebody about 400 miles away for half an hour on 40 m. He did have a big counterpoise which was coiled up on the floor underneath our table. It was a lot of fun and I'm thinking about trying it again in someway
