Carolyn,

I'm very sorry to hear this.  You must be reeling.   If I understand 
your question, you don't need to report anything.    When his license 
has reached the end of it's term, it will lapse, whether it's next year, 
or 8 years down the road.   You don't  need to do anything.  I think 
after the license has lapsed, there is a 2 year period, after which the 
call sign is put back into the pool to be reissued.

I think that if you or another ham in the family wants to take this call 
as a vanity call, there is a process to do this, but  I really don't 
know the procedure or the time frame.

In any event you have too much on your plate right now.   Don't give any 
of this junk a moment's thought.
