By simply tuning around the bands and listening.  Nothing magical about it.
Often there will be a pileup of sorts, so when you hear a bunch of guys
calling in at the same time, that is a good indication that something
special is on frequency.  If you listen for the station they are all
calling, it will either be the W1AW station or DX.  Either way, that is a
good place to find someone good to call.
