Well...not necessarily so. The digital artifacts when I've heard people try
to make chipmunk and "little creature" voices using compression tend to
become pretty obvious and don't sound the same as speed doubling with a real
reel-to-reel unit, or other analog medium.

Having said that, I haven't tried it myself with any editing program. I have
thought about trying using Audacity but have too many other irons in the
fire, so haven't yet.

The guy who did the Chip Monks was named David Seville and he had some other
hits where he sang in his normal, not speeded up voice.  Heck, nowadays, you
could accomplish that speeded up quality using a simple program like Studio

Good way of putting it, Howard.

I still remember when I was a kid, and one day, I played a Chipmunks
Christmas song from a 45 RPM record at 33 RPM, and suddenly figured out that
the Chipmunks were really men whose voices were just sped up to play the
part.

I don't know how many kids I told that to, after it was discovered, but to
this day, I sometimes feel a bit guilty about how many children's ilusions I
shattered.  (smile)

Yes it is.  Silly engineers.
Its like an old record player.  Remember playing the 33's on 45, or say even
earlier, the 45's on 78?
