Gary, I'm using Windows Live Mail as I write this.  It's quite useable. 
It's a little quirky at first, but you'll get used to it.  I'll help you 
along with it if you like.

For now, make sure you export your address book and email before letting go 
of outlook if that's possible.  WLM can import your contacts from a .csv 
file, and I can't remember how I exported my email, but I think it was some 
windows mail format.
