True, but that was the case for everybody just a few years ago. No one had
personal computers of any kind until the 80's or so.

I agree with you about the optimism. At one point in history, there was
no national library service, talking books, talking computers, and not even
braille. So, the life of blind people over all is much better than it was
just a few hundred years ago. I am grateful for that.
