I think that the problem goes much deeper than that. To some degree there
has been a de facto ban on saturated fats for some time. Research funding
has been difficult to find for those who wanted to investigate these fats
without a prejudice against them. Butchers were trained to trim fats,
retailers chose products containing reduced saturated fats. Saturated fats
were generally avoided and dietary fats, in general, were besmirched.

With a formal ban in the offing, I would be afraid of the next bureaucrat or
politician who might want to "improve" the legislation with a ban on
saturated fats (as mentioned earlier) or cholesterol-containing foods or
some other facet of the food supply that is condemned based on "scientific
findings" such as Keyes' work or that of Swank, who condemned dietary fats
for M.S. patients. Also, the pro-inflammatory properties of the previously
touted polyunsaturated fats might explain many health problems that arose
after publication of the anti-saturated fats position authored by the United
States Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs (1977).

I am not convinced trans fats are the real problem.
