Hope someone can help; I  would like to avoid a trip to the phone store!

Last night, I  tried to update the software through  Settings on my
Phone 4S.  On the screen a[[eared the musical note that is logo for
iTunes with an arrow and image of charger plug.  The phone also will
not shut off even when I try forcing it with Home key and on-off
switch pressed together.

Can anyone help?
