Hi All,
I bought a new dinky laptop because my old one was updating randomly
and continued to do so even after I messed with the settings.
The new laptop is a Lenovo N22 Winbook running Windows 10 Pro. Setup
went fine. At the end of it, the laptop found some updates. After they
were installed, I started having problems with my internet connection.
In a nutshell, the connection comes and goes, mostly goes.
* Initially, the computer seemed to connect for about a minute, then
disconnect for 15 minutes, then connect again for about a minute, and so
on. I ran the Windows troubleshooter. It said my firewall could be
getting in the way, so I went in to the area where you allow things to
get past the firewall, and I checked/allowed a bunch of stuff. I
restarted the computer when I was done.
* Things improved a little. Connection intervals were longer and
disconnection intervals were shorter, though not by much. I tried the
Windows troubleshooter again. This time it said my settings were fine
but my NDS server (or something like that) wasn't responding. I found an
article with troubleshooting tips, like reset the IP and find new
drivers. I started to try the first tip, but got stuck with steps that
didn't quite match up before I got far enough to make any changes to the
system.
* After that,I restarted the computer again and tried accessing the web
again. My online intervals were getting longer, but they were still only
a couple of minutes long. This time the Windows troubleshooter said my
gateway had been closed (or something like that) and that the problem
was now fixed. This time, I was able to stay online a long time, but the
internet was incredibly slow. I was downloading the Dropbox app, not my
files, and the download took about 20 minutes, then failed because I
lost my connection again.
While all this was going on, I was using my desktop to get work done.
Internet does seem patchy tonight, but my desktop is mostly behaving in
the usual way.
I'm confused about what's happening, and I'm trying to figure out
whether this is something I can fix myself (e.g., with changes in
settings, with new drivers, etc.) or something that signals I should
return my laptop because it's got a problem. I have the feeling it's
something I can fix, but I'm not sure.
Any wisdom?
Ciao
