Since I usually know the name of the file I'm searching for, I generally 
just go into the file and use first letter navigation to find it. If I'm 
not sure, I arrow through the list until something jumps out at me.

I found these instructions on advanced searches, which also link to more 
basic searches:

But I haven't tested them.
