Lisa,
To connect with someone on Linked In, you need to have a Linked In
account, so when you clicked on the links in your friend's email, Linked
In noticed you weren't registered and started helping you create an account.
Linked In is a little like Face Book, only it's for the career/job side
of your life. You set up a profile with information about where you've
gone to school and worked, and people you know can endorse you for
specific skills. The idea is that other Linked In users, like HR
professionals and recruiters, can find you by searching your skill set
and offer you work or other opportunities. I haven't had much luck with
this aspect of things. The kinds of jobs I've been offered are the same
sort of low-pay, part-time, no real future jobs I already have, but then
again, I don't do much with the site.
The site is accessible, so I was able to register an account and start
my own profile, but I found the profile interface confusing, so
eventually, I paid a virtual assistant to finish it for me, based on my
vitae.
ciao
