Do you have a source for this Harry? From what I've read, Metro isn't
going away, but rather morphing into something that will work a bit
better with the mouse. You'll be able to configure Windows 9 to boot
straight into the desktop. I hadn't heard the start screen was going
away altogether. I also hadn't heard that it would look just like
windows 7 or that the classic look was coming back. Of course, it's hard
to say for sure when the release of Threshold, which used to be called
Windows 8.2 and now seems to be called Windows 9, won't be released for
over a year.

I'm sure Microsoft will make sure Windows 9 differentiates itself from
Windows 8 to appease the masses, but I suspect it'll be a lot more like
windows 8 under the covers than it will be like Windows 7. Similar to
how Windows 7 was a lot more like Windows Vista than it was like Windows
XP, at least when it came to things that mattered like handling the
64-bit architecture and memory management.

Going back to Windows 7 would be a huge step backwards for Microsoft.
It's clear that for Microsoft to be successful, they'll have to crack
this mobile nut. I think they have a real chance to succeed with these
convertible devices. Windows 8 may not be the solution yet, but I think
it's revolutionary and a step in the right direction. Hopefully
Microsoft will just make a few cosmetic changes to satisfy the vocal
critics but continue to converge their various operating systems and
platforms and come up with an operating system and an interface that
will perform just as well on a mobile device as it does on a
desktop/laptop. If Microsoft continues to let themselves be held hostage
by those users who refuse to consider change then they're just going to
end up a nitch player on the desktop/laptop and watch from the sidelines
as Apple and Google carve up the mobile space.
