With some effort, I switched to Outlook 2010.

I don't know if you will be running Outlook as a stand-alone program, or
trying to interface it with G-mail.  But if you will be interfacing with
g-mail, you will want to do something with your all mail file, so things
sync properly.

I am not a total expert on this, which is why I had to seek the help of a
computer tech person in our town, but we did get it to work fairly well.

I know others on the list have used Thunderbird with a reasonable degree of
success as well.
