I just discovered a free addon for NVDA which integrates with the 
built-in Magnifier program on windows 7.  The addon allows Magnifier to 
start when NVDA starts and adds a few settings to control it, which you 
can get to from the NVDA Preferences dialog.  I don't know if this addon 
works with Magnifier on Windows 8 or 8.1.
