Thunderbird is a great free email program. I do remember there being a 
learning curve, but I've been using it for so long now that I don't 
remember what the specific issues were.

Since you're going to upgrade anyway, why not update to Windows 8.1? 
It's as accessible as windows 7. You can boot into desktop mode so you 
don't have to deal with the metro layout.
