Gary,

My experience is that Windows Defender does a good job with Windows 
8/8.1. I collect student work as email attachments, and haven't had any 
issues with viruses or with computer weirdness that may be due to 
viruses. I also download from the web often though I don't do torrents 
or a lot of other things that are in vogue.
