I hope you enjoy your antenna and radio. have you thought of putting the antenna in the attic? you should be able to come up with a good ground plane. I suggest something much better than a pie pan, as even the largest are nowhere near a proper sized ground plane. and that is important for the match of the antenna as well as well as getting rid of common mode rf traveling back along the coax shield. I would add some pieces of aluminum or other metal to the pie pan, or the easies solution is to instead of using the magnet mount indoors, place it outside, or order a nmo ground plane kit. larsen makes these and they work very well. I do not use them, but my friend who did commercial installations for a motorolla shop used them a lot and they always worked perfectly. You should be able to get one of those from the dealer. If you place this in the attic the antenna’s radiation will be above you and not on the same level as your head and will reduce your rf exposure several times over. Another advantage of the attic is you can put the antenna much higher and that will allow you to run less power. If you can’t put the antenna in the attic, you can also drill a tiny hole in the ceiling and put the top of the whip up into the attic, and leave the rest on the fridge. that will give you a reasonable ground plane and get most of the antenna above your head at least.I tried a pie pan on an nmo antenna a couple years ago and ran the antenna, rated at 250 w at 100 and melted the coil because the match was not flat, due to the improper ground plane. The match of your antenna is incredibly dependent on a proper ground plane.
