My VIP-1000 is similar, keeps pretty bad time though it is accurate
enough to turn and off my heat, / cool, at the approximate correct time. 
If it is within 30 seconds one way or another, fine, a few minutes, . . .
I'd rather not, rather be accurate but a few seconds is ok.
