I spent $50 on software and cable for the uv-5.  Yep, I can program it 
manually, but it is easier to make changes and clone with the rt 
systems.  And the cable just works.  I didn't mind the expense at all 
and don't regret the purchase.  To each his own or whatever...  What is 
well worth $50 for me may not be for you and vise versa...
