A useful gadget which I have is a croc clip with a bit of curtain wire on
the terminal end which I put into a vice and clamp, say, a 3.5mM plug while
soldering the connections.
When doing the tip, I have the plain of the terminal vertical.

I'm about to start some homebrew projects and would appreciate any 
recommendations of clamp-mount vises and instant-heat soldering irons 
(or guns).
