Interesting.  I've had much the same experience with the K3 utility. 
Upgrading the firmware is a snap.  Also, the radio maintains all your 
settings so, while its wise to save your configuration, you don't have to. 
In 3 and a half years and over several firmware updates, I've never lost 
settings.  Elecraft has done a terific job with their utility.  73,  Lou
