Howard:
So far, I have had some luck converting files from dot d o c x format into
RTF format via a free e-mail service called robo-braille. You just e-mail
them the document as an attachment, and it does the conversions for you.
The e-mail address is:

However, since I am now going back to teaching, I will be working more at
home than I did when I held my Department Head administrative position.
This means I will be getting more and more dot d o c x files to work with
here at home (including e-mailed student papers), since my university has
now shifted completely over to Windows 7 and Office 2010.
My hope is that, if I can get my personal g-mail account to work effectively
through Outlook 2010, I'll be able to get my work e-mail to work that way as
well.
All of this remains to be seen, though.
If I can't get Outlook 2010 to work, I do have Outlook 2003, so my next
option will be to see if I can get that to work on my Windows 7 home PC.
If that option fails, then I may try Thunderbird.
In the meantime, I'm sure glad I have this back-up Windows XP machine with
Outlook Express!
If you can send me the link to that dot d o c x file converter you use, that
would be great.
