Linda, you'll still want as good an antenna as you can get. The reason is
that once you get on the radio, you'll want to do better and better with
what you've got, and you'll want to get out as far as you can, so don't
settle for something less than you can possibly get up. Probably an outdoor
antenna as high as you can get it will be good, especially with
line-of-sight propogation, which is what you have with VHF/UHF.

Somebody on here asked what I was trying to do with the antenna and it am
trying to connect with our local repeater as the bigger repeater was
removed.
He asked how far I was from the repeater and here is the answer I got:

Only down side is that we are on the blocked side of the antenna- meaning we
are on the side where the signal must transmit thru the tower
With handhelds it is a bit of a challenge - but your new radio should not
