I got a D104 with my first phone transmitter, a Hallicrafters HT37 and still
have that mic. I used it later on a Drake T4Xb and a TR7. All of those
radios wanted a high Z microphone.

I'm now using it on my Elecraft KX3 but did replace the element. I've heard
the old D104 crystal elements fail over time and also, the KX3, like most
newer radios, wants low Z.

I bought a Heil HC5 replacement element and a conversion kit that I found
somewhere on the web. I didn't do it myself because I'm not good at blind
soldering. But, except for soldering the two wires to the element, yes,, I
think it's a blind-friendly task.

The conversion kit had some foam to hold the Heil element in right position
in the middle of the head, just behind the screen. Also, it had new cloth to
place behind the screen so that it looks new again. It's working very well
with the KX3.

By the way, this was the older, non-amplified D104.

I once thought the D-1o4 was the best-- ... --until folks started =
criticizing my audio.

Do you think changing the D-1o4 element is a blind-friendly task?
