Ya never know about people, Butch. Maybe it is as you say, that he was over the top with the independence thing and felt he had something to prove to someone, even if someone was just himself. Maybe He didn't want his wife to feel as though she was just a pair of eyeballs (though I can't fathom this in a social situation such as this). Maybe *she* wanted it that way and didn't want to do the sighted guide thing. Or maybe she was a rotten sighted guide, and he found it easier to not rely on her as a guide. (I've had some pretty horrible guides in my life, so, yeah, could be.)
