Sorry I'm so late in replying to this question, I've been traveling every
week this month.
As already stated the GRE PSR600 is a good scanner. Using PSREdit software,
the unit is pretty easy to load and configure and you can even use the radio
control feature of this software and (most easily and dynamically with a
refreshable braille display) read frequency, active system, active scanlist,
active Spectrum sweeper and Service Search info as it would appear on the
lcd display of the radio.
I am sorry to also hear that GRE is no longer going to manufacture these
units because I've been a very happy GRE PSR500 owner for over a year now.
The unit works well with conventional and P25 trunked systems, with loud,
clear audio.
another unit to consider, perhaps the only one, unless there's another I
don't know about is the Uniden BCD396xt handheld or the mobile version, the
BCD996XT. The BCD396XT is smaller than the GRE PSR500 (which I like) but was
priced significantly higher (which I could not afford at the time of my
purchase). Blind people are using them successfully and, the FreeScan
software is reportedly very accessible and makes loading and configuring
these scanners pretty easy. I've heard the BCD396XT, owned by several of my
blind friends, and I find the audio loud and clear and theP25 performance
very good. the earlier BCD396T and BCD996T models required more tweaking to
improve their P25 audio performance, but the debut of the PSR 500/600 seems
to have driven Uniden to respond with significant improvements which appear
in the XT versions of the 396/996.
I hope this is useful info for you.
Best regards

I actually have a GRE Psr600 which is the Radioshack pro197 I believe.
No touch screens there.
These scanners may still be on sale at the shack, not sure.
They are getting hard to find but are a very good scanner.
GRE Japan has decided to stop making scanners I believe but GRE America is
looking in to continuing to manufacturrer these scanners so can't really say
that there discontinued yet.
