For those of us who have low ferritin (low iron stores) which sometimes goes
with celiac disease and gluten intolerance, I'd like to share my recent
experience. I had ferritin in the range of 5-7 for several years despite
taking iron supplements. My gastroenterologist suggested a nutritionist who
told me to avoid foods containing phytic acid, such as nuts, beans and
grains for several hours before/after taking the supplement, and to stop
taking iron with meals. She advised I take the supplement, which is
Proferrin ES, with vitamin C at bedtime. I took 2 Proferrin ES and 1000 IU
of vitamin C. My ferritin went from 5 in May to 37 in August. This puts me
squarely in the normal range for the first time in years. I hope this may be
useful to someone else. I didn't know that phytic acid binds itself to
minerals and removes them from the body so they are not properly absorbed.
