Robyn, I do not hunt so I cannot help you there.  But, you might want to
check out the web site TheSurvivalPodcast.com.
It is about self reliance and self sufficiency, including hunting and
permaculture.  I imagine that someone on their forum could answer this

Subject: [PALEOFOOD] hunting question

This is a question for all you paleo-hunters out there.  I live in  Florida,
and there are wild rabbits everywhere.  It occurred to me that it would be
easy enough to trap and eat them, but I was told by several local hunters
not to eat the wild rabbits in the summer months.  They said that the
extreme heat causes some sort of liver disease that taints the meat.  I have
never heard of this and question how an entire species can be diseased every
summer and still live in the area (and apparently thrive)... 
Also, why only rabbits?  
Can anyone shed some light on the subject?
