When you say Windows Express, do you mean Outlook Express?

I'm running Windows Seven, and I use Thunderbird almost exclusively. I 
do pull up Windows Live Mail from time to time, and I find it 
accessible. My brother also uses it on Windows 8.1, and although it took 
him some getting used to, he doesn't complain about it to me any more.

There's a mail app on Windows 8.1 which you don't want to use. You want 
to make sure you download and use the full desktop version of Windows 
Live Mail. If you're going to have to go through Windows Live Mail to 
convert your mail to Thunderbird then I'd suggest just giving Windows 
Live Mail a trial run to see if you like it. If you do then there's no 
reason to move on to Thunderbird.

Finally, if your mail provider uses IMAP then all of your mail is stored 
on the server so there's no need to move your email from client to 
client. I use IMAP with Gmail, and I access the same mail from multiple 
systems and multiple email clients with no problems. If you're using 
POP3 then you will have to figure out how to move your mail into your 
new client of choice.
