Subject: [azcb-chat] RE: accessible Whirlpool products

See below about my experience with Whirlpool customer service regarding their product accessibility.

Hello Whirlpool info center,

I think it is important for you to know that your answer to my question is wrong. Had I listened to you, I would have not purchased a Whirlpool Cabrio Dryer. American Foundation for the Blind AFB

www.afb.org

did a review of appliances in 2011 and at that time your Duett line of laundry care machines had ascending tones to indicate the different level or option available from that button. So for the dryers for temperature, you press the single button that cycles through the 4 available options (air, low, medium, and high) heat, and each press gives a different pitch high to low ascending tone until you press 4 times at which time it starts back with the first tone. That means if you are blind and cannot see the display, you can still select the desired temperature among the other available options for each button.

The folks at AFB mentioned that Whirlpool customer service would say that there are no accessable selector buttons on their laundry units. The reviewers from AFB recommended that blind consumers ask the store sales team if they could plug in a washer to check for accessability since the washer and dryers in a partivular series will behave in a similar manner as far as beeping tones. So the wonderful sales people (Wayn and his team) at my local Loe's 7100 West Ray rd, Chandler AZ), got a hand truck and wheeled a Cabreo washer over to an outlet and plugged it in for me. And sure enough, all the selecter buttons make ascending tones as they cycle through each option with each press. I wonder how many potential customers you miss by giving miss information about your own products. I am going to post this everywhere I can in hopes that other blind consumers will have correct information and all other consumers will know that Customer Service at Whirlpool is not that knowledg

eable about their own product line. Maybe management will think this is important enough to do better training with support and sales staff.

Blind and all consumers will also know what wonderful staff work at Loe's.

Dear Terri Hedgpeth:

Thank you for contacting Whirlpool with your new product shopping questions! We appreciate your interest in our home appliances.

Thank you for your reply. You can raise, lower or turn the tones off but, there are not different sounding tones or beeps for the separate functions.

Thank you for contacting Whirlpool. Please let us know if you have any further concerns.

Thank you Cheryl,

I understand that the duit series makes ascending tones for each button as it cycles through the different options. Doesn't the Cabreo wed5500xw do the same?

Regretfully, our dryer only make one tone and we have suspended providing Braille overlays for our appliances. We recommend using a Braille label maker to identify the different cycles and options.
