Colin,

I can't help you with the keyboard question, but I think I can answer 
the question about the placement of the start and end markers.

To stop and start playback, I use the spacebar. I hit space to play the 
file. Then when I get to the place where I want to place a marker, I hit 
space again, then hit the left or right bracket. That works well for me, 
though I do notice that Audacity seems to stop a smidge sooner. I don't 
know if the spacebar stops at a different place from the F7, but you may 
try that.
