I can't answer all of your questions Dave, but having operated a drake C
line independantly with a tuner and audible voltage controled oscellator,
for thirty years; it is a step to a modern radio. Probably stepping over
four generations of technology at one step.
1. The ts-590 sits on a desk, and has lots of knobs.
2. Like most modern radios, it takes a separate 12 volt power supply.
Probably 25 amps or so are needed.
Their is nothing magical about the 12 volt source, that I know of.
The radio self tunes, and it has an internal tuner. The range of this tuner
is limited, so you may need an external tuner instead, depending on the SWR
that you encounter.
The set up of the radio is done through menus. Their choices and settings
talk.
I sure like those old stations of yours, but the ease and flexibility of
operation will amaze you!!!
