Yes, using a pneumatic hammer to drive them in is a good way.  I have
equipment like that, but most hams wouldn't, and would probably not want to
spend the dough necessary to rent an electric model, or go thru the hassle
of going to a rental center to rent one, and then back again to return it.
Also, a single rod isn't enough.  Depending on soil type, it is common to
drive a dozen or more into the ground at various locations, depending on the
relative positions of the tower to the shack, for example.  There are many
white pages written on the subject of proper installation of a comprehensive
grounding system.  Mike Higgins, K6AER, has written a number of them.

when I put in my antenna my son had a jack hammer, and 10 seconds or
less later that 8 foot ground rod was about 5 inches out of the ground.
