Having never used an MC-85, I don't know anything about it except that it 
sounds like a neat mic to have.

I've wondered about that simplex checker, and finally come to the conclusion 
that it is strictly a visual aid.  I think I even tried using an HT to 
simulate a strong signal on the input of the repeater, but I couldn't tell 
what it was doing.  Maybe I should try that experiment again just to see if 
I get a better result.
